Hi my name is Gabrielle Wade and this is my first weekly reflection on my first ever blog. I am currently reading the book called Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. I would say that this book is very interesting and it only takes a certain type of person to understand and enjoy this book. I am already on page 254 and I sometimes cannot believe the things that are being said between Eleanor and Park. This is a two sided story where each chapter describes how Eleanor and Park felt when something happens to them in the book. This book takes place in a place called the Flats that is a mostly white populated area with the main characters attending a school in this area. A lot of things goes on in the Flats and everyone knows everything that goes on there too. Eleanor is a particular type of person with her own style and awkwardness that you cannot do anything but love. She is a bit of the big girl side with long curly red hair with freckles all over her body. She comes from a sad background that I wish no one should ever go through. Her mother is married to her abusive husband, Richie, and Eleanor sadly cannot do anything about it. I think her mother should just leave him but I don’t think things will turn out well if she did. He may try to find her and possibly hurt her worse than he already does. When I was reading that part of the book, I instantly thought of all those movies that I have watched or have heard of about abusive boyfriends, finding and sometimes trying to kill their ex-girlfriends for leaving them. Why people can be so cruel I would never understand, but I wish that it wasn’t a thing. Park is like the complete opposite. He is mixed kid, Asian with White, and comes from a two-parent home. He stands out from the rest of the people in the house because he loves wearing black every day. When I heard that I pictured him as a hard punk fan wearing black from head to toe. Recently in my book, Eleanor and Park are together as a couple and you would have never guessed it. They started off as complete strangers and Park thinking she was weird. When they first met, Park didn't even want to share his bus seat with her but now he loves her company. Park cannot go one day without thinking or wanting to be with Eleanor and Eleanor wants the same with Park. I think they must have been a weird looking couple, only because of the way Eleanor dresses due to her lack of fashionable attire and Park's occasional wearing of eyeliner to school. I really enjoy this book because I love the things that Eleanor says. Every time I open my book to read I am always laughing at something that she said about Park. My favorite quote that was said by Eleanor was "Mi gusta comer su cara" (p.159) which means I like to eat your face in English. Eleanor was thinking about Park when she wrote that. The little weird thoughts that she has about Park always makes me laugh in class or wherever I am reading this book. Until next week!
